About HCMC

The Hibiscus Coast Motorsport Club was originally founded in the 1960's as a club catering for car enthusiasts on Auckland's Hibiscus Coast. The local constable was instrumental in setting up the club, and the first members were upright citizens who were willing to stop and help anyone stranded on the side of the road with car problems. Not your typical young hoons. Today, HCMC is still a club for car enthusiasts, but unlike many car clubs in NZ we cater for the whole family, actively encouraging the female contingent and younger members to compete as well as the traditional males (in fact, one of our most successful club members one year was both female and under 15 years old!)

Being family oriented HCMC generally holds informal grass-root type events such as Trials, Motorkhanas, Autocrosses, Hillclimbs and Rallysprints which the whole family can get involved in. As well as being fun, these type of events are cheap to compete in and teach you basic driving skills which will make you a safer driver on the road and during competition. And contary to popular opinion you don't need an expensive competition car, for these club events a standard road car is often the most suitable type of car you can use. However, not all of our members are into the grass-roots level events, and we also cater for them. HCMC was the creator of the Auckland region Woolf Mufflers Rallysprint Series, running six rounds per year for many years until handing five of them to other clubs. HCMC has also had many top rally drivers amongst its members, with names such as Paul Adams, Rod Millen, Todd Bawden, John Woolf and Ray Wilson on past and present membership lists.

As well as the competition side of the club there is also the social side. Other members are a goldmine of information for those wanting advice on matters automotive, and once every month we hold a clubnight to allow the members to get together. For these evenings we go out and do activities such as go-karting and ten-pin bowling, while other evenings held at the clubrooms will usually include a visiting guest speaker.
